  1. My upbringing by my grandmother – thirty-minute talk – permission? please ask.

Postcard from my grandmother, when I was thirty, showing a good example of how I basically grew up hearing only ten percent of English, compared to most other children. She had a third-grade level of formal schooling and was born in Lubelskie province, Poland, ten miles from Ukraine. Her husband – my grandfather – was born in Odessa, Ukraine, some miles to the east of her county. She spoke Polish and German, and while she raised me, she knew almost no English. This postcard shows her level of mastery of English after forty years in this country.
